music from the 20's and 30's. Sometime back he sent me an mp3 of Tommy Dorsey's 1936 recording (the most famous) of "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You". Richard told me that Dorsey had actually recorded it in 1932, but this is version the world remembers. I've played a version of this tune in the key of C for more than 30 years and always thought that a guitar transcription of the original recording would be a great learning experience and a really popular arrangement as this is one of the best known recordings in the history of music. While on vacation and missing the email interplay with my musical friends, I decided to work on a guitar arrangement of Dorsey's version. I assumed that the Sax section would provide a interesting chord solo. So I started transcribing the recording. The sax section is in 4-part harmony and close spaced chords. This is difficult to play on the guitar due to the tuning of fourths and a third, but for most other solo instruments capable of playing multi-part harmony, it's standard practice. There is a trick one can use in adapting 4-part harmony for the guitar: Take the 2nd highest note in the chord and drop it an octave. I decided rather than do that, I'd just convert it to 3-part harmony by deleting the lowest note in each chord. When I got to the piano part I got the idea to put together the piece as an ensemble and send it to Richard, who is also a trombonist. So I did two versions: this one with trombone, sax section, and rhythm section, and a guitar trio version. Some other variations from the Dorsey recording are: 1. I left out the sax harmony behind the trombone solos. I started to add them when I had all the other parts finished, but listening to the trombone in front of the rhythm guitar and bass sounded pretty nice to me. 2. I wrote an original guitar break to substitute for the piano solo on the 2nd bridge. 3. I transcribed the bass part which was mostly imagination on my part as it was obscured in the harmony. After I finished and listened to it, I thought that I could write a more interesting bass line. During the trombone solos, the bass line is in the spirit of the original recording, but during the sax and guitar breaks I wrote a walking bass. 4. I wrote a rhythm guitar part in the spirit of the recording, rather than attempt to transcribe it. If one is interested in playing this tune on the guitar, then let me know and I'll send my version with the guitar playing all parts. This version is meant to be a tongue in cheek belly laugh.c9   %).38TrombonepearcB   %).38Sax sectionar c° %).38Guitaroredtarc° %).38Rhythm Guitarrc °5:?DBass Chandelle001103110000=1077>7:7<87F300P022S0/00000000000001:@4/111103'::::H<1000010o0020000000008V0000000Page &p / &n&c&2&t &c&6&s &r&3&m &r&3&t - &3&s
